Importance And History Of Regent Exam

In New York, a regent is a statewide standard examination in core school
subjects required to attain specific regent diploma to graduate. To graduate,
students need to earn certain credit points by passing in the year and a half
courses. The student needs to pass at least five subjects to get a diploma. The
students who achieve higher marks get a certificate of honor. There is a course
known as the advanced regent diploma, Students who want to study in college
after high school takes this course. Many colleges and universities give
preference to students who choose advance NY regent exam. The
minimum score to pass is 65. There are several subjects that include: English,
global history/ geography, US history/ geography, mathematics, and earth
science.
There is a long Regent New York US historyas the first Regents Examinations were administered in November 1866. However,
in 1878 the Regents Examination system was expanded in order to assess the
modules which are being taught in the secondary schools of New York, and the
Regents exams were first taken only after the high school end-of-course exams.
During inaugural tests, only five subjects were taken in exams which were
algebra, Latin, American History, natural philosophy, natural geography. Then
tests were administered in November, February, and June but with time the
timing changed as well as the subjects.
Local diploma exam requirements and
information
Students with an Individualized Education Program are able to obtain a
local diploma by long island regents’ review through
'safety nets'. Similar to the regents’ diploma, the local diploma is recognized
as a high school diploma, which allows the student to attend respective
colleges with favorable subjects, enroll in the military, and have jobs that
require a high school diploma. General Education students can only obtain the
local diploma by appealing 2 Regents’ exams which is English and Math.
The safety nets in NY regent exam include:
• Low Pass option: Here every student must earn at least 55-64 on a required regents’ exam if he or she wants to qualify for a local diploma. Students who score 52-54 can also appeal to that score. This option is available for all those students having disabilities or having English as a Second Language program.
• Compensatory option: In Regents’ New York history the Students who score 45-54 on a required Regents’ exam, but are scoring 65 or higher on another regent exam can compensate the score using the latest marks. The compensatory option may not be able to use for English or Math Regents’ exams, but the student may use these subjects’ marks to compensate for another regents’ exam where they scored 45-54.
